Hey Jube

Been ruminating on this one for a while.  I’ve always liked the Marshall Silver Jubilee amp, and judging from the selling prices of them on the used market, a lot of other people like them too.   I’ve been putting off building a version forever.  But I’ve done a detailed review of the circuit – the boys at Marshall did something different.  I am now embarking on building the Phaez version of that circuit, and it will be available shortly.  50W version, no footswitching, no clean, just the lead.  It’s a more pure signal path that way.

Tentative name is Jubenville.  Price is $745 chassis only, so add a Sourmash head cab and tubes, and you’d be at about a grand.

This Old Beater

I should tell you players about my new favourite guitar. It’s far from new though. I’ve had it a while. I’ve had perhaps hundreds of guitars over the years, nothing decadent, but many Gibson Les Pauls, and Wolfgangs have been through my grasp. This one here is special, and it is the one I reach for when I need to test out an amp. I was just testing out a Pasadena 18W and it was just frickin glorious. Coulda played for hours.
What is it? Here are the parts:
1980’s Yamaha SE250 mahogany body
Musikraft 25.5″ neck
Mighty Mite Floyd Rose
Dimarzio Virtual PAF in the bridge position
Dimarzio Area 67

I made a change recently that took it from meh to HOLY SHIT. Notice the bridge pickup – it’s angled, but angled opposite to what is typically found. The reason being is I wanted a tight crunchy tone in the low E and A strings, which is much harder to get the further away the pickup is from the bridge. Originally, the distance from low E saddle to the center of the humbucker was about 2.2″. Now it is about 1.8″. And the higher strings have INCREASED distance to the saddle. Does anyone like playing the treble strings on a strat with the bridge pickup selected? NO, of course not. Well some may like it but it’s pretty damn spiky and unpleasant if you ask me. The humbucker position in this black frankie is opposite – the tone gets a little mellower as you move up the strings.
Anyway, this thing is a killer instrument, the Musikraft neck feels wonderful (I think I paid about $250 for it). The Dimarzio Area 67 is awesome – it’s position is perfect on this body.
Bottom Line – don’t be afraid to use an old body – nice aged wood – a new neck, and keep playing with pickups until it tastes right. I REALLY like the DP197 Virtual PAF.
And don’t forget to be mindful of saddle-to-pickup spacing. You can really transform your tone.

F Class + M Class 18W

Here’s an idea that I’ve been rolling around for a while.  A simple 2 channel amp with a post phase inverter master volume.  One channel is Blackface, the other a www.18watt.com lite 2b circuit.  F-class would have Volume Treble Bass, the M-class Volume and Tone.  The Lite 2B is a very cool simple circuit – do some research on what others think of it.  It is M******* all the way.  PP EL84’s. I know both of these circuits extremely well, and put together in a simple package only makes sense.  Did I mention it would have a PPIMV (master volume)?  If you are interested lemme know.  Get a great cab from Bob at Sourmash.   You can name it whatever you want, but the default name will be FM18.

Price is $599 chassis only.

You’d never outgrow it.

Anyone looking for a basic power amp?

I’ve had a few requests for a basic tube power amp – either as a pedal platform or to use with something like the AXE FX.  Can I/will I do it?  Sure.  Just figure out how many watts you’d like.  No matter HOW great your boutique pedals are or how good the Fractal unit sounds, it’ll sound better with a tube output stage (and one that is clipping a bit too!)  email me at phaezamp@gmail.com

50 watt SIBLY

Here’s one I just updated to the latest SIBLY. Nice aesthetics. Presence control on the rear. 4, 8, 16 ohm speaker connects. Likely won’t be any more painted chassis like this one. Has a bottom on it. Available.

The Star Spangled Banner for singers at sporting events

The Dragonfly 25W amp

Just finished this one – did a bunch of small changes to the circuit. Overdrive and Clean. Very, very nice. OD is D-style with a little Daisycutter. Clean is Fender Blackface. 2 sep inputs and has a loop. 4, 8, 16 ohm speaker connections. Cost will be $899 in a relic head cab. Or $699 chassis only, excl tubes, and get a nice plexi style cab from Bob at Sourmash.

4X10 Custom Cab

Hey y’all,

Charlie here from Phaez Amps. I wanted to sound off on the Custom 4X10 cab built by Mr. Jimmy Peach. For those of you who don’t know, Jim Peach is a master craftsman responsible for most of the killer head and speaker cabs you see on our site. Very soon I’ll be posting some pics of a 2X12 Custom Combo he built that’ll knock you out.
However, at this time I’d like to say a few words about Randy’s 4X10. Now I’ve used primarily 4X12 and 2X12 speaker enclosures for the entirety of my professional life and I must admit I’ve been a snob about it. I never really thought a 10″ speaker could rival the muscle and girth of a 12″ Greenback. Man, was I ever wrong! The Eminence 105’s in this 4X10 are killer speakers. Clean or dirty, it makes no difference, they get the job done with ease. It certainly bears mentioning that the cab is tighter than two coats of paint which has a profound effect on the tone with no rattles or vibration.
I was so impressed with the Eminence 105’s I bought two for myself and I’m having Jimmy build me a 2X10 to house them. I have seen the light people.

Cheers!
